What Is Digital Marketing?

Let's discuss what digital marketing actually is.  Digital marketing refers to advertising delivered through digital channels such as search engines, websites, social media, email, and mobile apps. While this term covers a wide range of marketing activities, all of which are not universally agreed upon, we’ll focus on the most common types below.

1). Paid Search:

There are various tools and terms used in Paid search, i.e., paid digital advertising such as Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Pay-Per-Click (PPC), Cost-Per-Click (CPC), Cost-Per-Mile (CPM), sponsored listings, and that’s before you get to services provided by the search engines themselves – Google AdWords and Yahoo Bing Network.

What is CPM & CPC?

Cost-Per-Click (CPC) means that you as an advertiser appearing on a SERP, pay the search engine for each user’s individual click on your ad.

Cost-Per-Mile (CPM) means that you as an advertiser appearing on a SERP, pays the search engine for every 1,000 times your ad appears on the page The user doesn’t have to click-through, it’s just about page impressions.

CPM is perhaps best for companies who want to raise brand awareness. CPC is best for sales.

2). Content Marketing:

Content marketing means creating and sharing valuable content to attract and convert prospects into customers, and customers into repeat buyers. The type of content is closely related to what you sell; in other words, you’re educating people so that they know, like, and trust you enough to do business with you.

  • Landing pages

3). Social Media Marketing:

Social media, itself, is a catch-all term for sites that may provide radically different social actions. For instance, Twitter is a social site designed to let people share short messages or “updates” with others. Facebook, in contrast is a full-blown social networking site that allows for sharing updates, photos, joining events and a variety of other activities.

Marketing Land is the sister site to Search Engine Land that covers all facets of internet marketing, including these popular topics within social media marketing:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • Linkedin
  • YouTube

4). Email Marketing:

Email has been around for more than two decades, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. It’s still the quickest and most direct way to reach customers with critical information. The reason is simple: Consumers are very attached to their emails. Just ask yourself how many times you have checked your email in the past hour...See what we mean?

But great marketers know that not just any email will do. Successful email campaigns must be engaging, relevant, informative, and entertaining. To succeed, your marketing emails should satisfy these five core attributes:

  • Trustworthy
  • Relevant
  • Conversational
  • Be coordinated across channels
  • Strategic

5). Marketing Automation:

Marketing automation: an in-depth introduction looking at benefits, success factors and evolutions.

Marketing automation originally referred to software developed to automate so-called repetitive tasks and was often seen as a subset of CRM (Customer Relationship Management) enabling marketing divisions to increase efficiency. There is a strong link between marketing automation, content marketing, content management and other platforms.

Some of the key things Marketing Automation does include:

• Email message and campaign creation
• Automated email campaign deployment and measurement (e.g., drip and nurture campaigns)
• Triggered emails
• Lead management and routing
• Automated lead nurturing
• Automated lead scoring
• Creation and hosting of landing pages and forms
• Website visitor tracking
• Social media marketing and sharing, including blog integration
• Inbound marketing, including some SEO capability and account-based marketing
• Database with segmentation capabilities
